Thankful Thursday, 1/28/10, The State of our Union

Watching The State of the Union with my husband always puts me in a bad mood.  How can two people who have been married for 25 years have such differing opinions?  Immediately following the speech, I was finished.  My husband wanted to know why I wasn't staying for the Republican rebuttal.  It was his opinion that because he sat through President Obama's speech, I should sit through the Republican rebuttal.  I told him I already knew what they were going to say because I had just sat through an hour of listening to his comments about the President's speech.  Besides, I never sat through the Democratic rebuttal of President Bush's speeches either.  I find the rebuttals tiresome.  The parties have gotten so predictable I could have probably presented the Republican rebuttal myself!

Immediately following the speech, I popped over to Facebook to find out that the President had lied!!  Oh my... the right wing machine was off and running.  Then a friend commented that the President had a lovely soul and she was proud of him.  Someone commented that the President was a "douche".  A douche?  Even on George W. Bush's worst day, I wouldn't have called him a douche.  I deplore that expression as it seems to be the favored insult in my house between my sons.  It's also ignorant because a douche is simply defined as a stream of water.  Something cleansing.  It's also French for shower.  This is what I tell Max when he complains that Mike called him a douche.  Why get offended because someone calls you a stream of cleansing water?  Shrug it off.

For me, I'd like to direct a stream of cleansing water into politics and clean out the extremes on both sides of the aisle.

Where's the thankful part you may ask?

Well, today, 1/28/10, I am thankful to live in America.  In a place where I can stand up and walk out of a room when something distasteful to me is happening.  In a place where I can disagree with my husband without threat of stoning or mutilation.  I can agree to disagree with friends.  I can even disagree with our President without fear of arrest or deportation.  I am an idealist and I love what our country stands for.  Freedom of speech, freedom to worship as we choose or not, freedom to love as we choose without fear.  Home of the Free.  As far as these ideals go, I'd say the state of our union was wonderful!

God Bless America!

Carpe Diem!

Proud to be a RE/MAX Agent!

world leaders

I am very proud to be a RE/MAX agent.

You hear so much conflicting data on which company is the best, who is the top franchise, who has more agents, etc.  All I can speak to is my own experience and the data provided by RE/MAX International.

My experience with RE/MAX, particularly RE/MAX Preferred is nothing but positive.  The broker/owners of our company are two great men, who are generous with their time and talents and run a top-notch office that supplies us with every essential, from the latest technology and education to office equipment.  There's a strong emphasis on creating relationships with our clients and our support staff are second to none in helping us whenever needed.  We have two offices to better serve our clients, in Newtown Square and West Chester.

I think it's important for the public to know that it's one thing to have a lot of licensees in a company, and it's quite another to have professional agents who produce.  A recent look at one of the competing real estate company's "most profitable" offices shows that a third of their agents hadn't closed a single transaction in the past 12 months!  Yet this company boasts that they have a higher agent count than RE/MAX.

A look at transactions per side by company for the year 2008 shows that RE/MAX agents averaged 12 per agent.  Our closest competition closed 6.6.

While RE/MAX may not have been listed as #1 Franchise in the "2010 Entrepreneur Franchise 500 Survey", RE/MAX was honored with this distinction 9 out of the past 11 years!  That's quite a track record and although we weren't #1, we were still in the top 10!

If you are thinking of a move, I'd like you to consider talking to me.  I'd like to put the power of RE/MAX and my knowledge of our local market place, to work for you!  I am proud to be a RE/MAX Agent and proud that I have been in the business of helping people buy and sell homes for 25 years.

What are you reading? 1/25/10

The undisputed winner for the best Christmas present this year was John Irving's latest novel, The Last Night in Twisted River.  It was such a wonderful surprise for me because while I usually know when he has a new novel in the stores, this time I didn't and my mom surprised me!  She couldn't wait for me to open it and it was one of the last presents I opened that morning and I literally squealed with delight.

last night in twisted river

John Irving, for those who love his novels as much as I do, did not disappoint.  The characters are complicated, profane, funny, fiercely independent, intelligent, sad and all of the things you've come to expect from this author.  It's a book about love and loss and parental love.  Warning... small minded, extremely rigid right wing conservatives with absolutely no sense of humor will not enjoy this book.  For the rest of us, conservatives, moderates and liberals alike, it was a delightful escape from every day life and I laughed out loud several times, smiled, cried a little and thoroughly enjoyed my time spent reading it.  The fact that the main character was Italian and a chef added to the fun for me.  I do not want to say anymore about it so as not to spoil it.

It's hard for me to say this is my favorite John Irving novel because I have loved so many of his books.  If this isn't my favorite, it is right up there with A Prayer for Owen Meany, The Cider House Rules and A Widow for One Year, all of which I've read several times each.  If you haven't picked up one of John Irving's novels, I urge you to treat yourself.

So, what are you reading?

Thankful Thursday, 1/21/10

For the most part, I am a pretty happy person.  I try to be as happy as I can be with whatever circumstance I find myself in.  There are days when I am deeply unhappy, but they don't last and I bounce back pretty quickly from anything that's bothering me.  I've always known that this was a gift, just as my ability to find humor everywhere is definitely a gift.  I used to work with a woman who complained because the people around her laughed too much and she found it annoying.  How sad.  I could literally fall on the floor laughing if someone turns one of those laugh boxes on.  I think laughter is a gift and I wear, almost every day, a pendant my son Mike bought me that says "Laughter is music for our hearts to dance to".

Just this morning, I was driving my 13 year old Max to school and we were talking and laughing about this ridiculous formula a single male friend of mine was telling me about.  It seems he heard that the ideal age of a woman for a man is the man's age, divided by 2 and add 9.   Well, for my 13 year old math whiz, this was wonderful news.  This makes his ideal woman a 15 1/2 year old!!  He was thrilled!

I'm 50 and my husband Jack is 66.  We're driving along and I said "wait a minute..  this silly formula makes me too old for Daddy!"   Now we are really laughing and I said I don't understand why the same formula wouldn't apply to women.  I told Max that my "perfect" age of a man would be 34!  I told Max that I didn't need someone in their 30's, but I thought I could be pretty happy with someone in his 40's.  That's when the killjoy, who was enjoying the conversation so far, informed me that "mother, you will be happy with someone 66 because you are married"!

Well, I don't know about you, but I think Max was a little bit of a spoiled sport!  I also think he's learned the old double standard pretty early in life!  He then said "I tell everyone my mom is crazy, but no one believes me".  We laughed all the way to school and I am still smiling as I write this.

I will also be pondering, for the rest of the day, men that are 34!  I had my eye on my Antonio Banderas replacement, and guess what?? He's only 33!

gilles marini

Darn!  He's too young for me even with this silly formula.  But hey, that's what daydreaming is for!

Today, 1/21/10, I am thankful for the gift of laughter.  My sons and I share many, many laughs when we are together, and while our conversations may be "crazy" by some parental standards, I am blessed with two very good boys that bring me much happiness.  I often ask them if they wished they had a more "normal" mom, and they both have answered with a resounding "NO!"

Carpe Diem!

Martin Luther King, Jr., 1/15/29 - 4/4/68

Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.  - Martin Luther King, Jr.

king

Martin Luther King, Jr.  Born on January 15, 1929, and died, far too young, on April 4, 1968.

The progress we have made in this country regarding respecting and accepting our differences is a tribute to this great man.  We have a long way to go and my hope is that we can honor him, every day by walking in the light of altruism and turning our back on destructive selfishness.

There is a story about the dash that's between a person's birth date and the day of their death.  This great man did a lot of living and changing of the world in his dash, and I am humbled to honor him each year at this time.

Thankful Thursday, A special moment revisited

A while ago I posted this picture of me and my son Mike (bottom left), my two nephews Alex and Charles (top left), my darling niece Elena and my adopted nephew Matthew.  It's Christmas Day and I am 3 months pregnant in this picture with my lovely son Max.

Christmas Day, 14 years ago

My sister-in-law Mary Anne and I alternate Christmas day dinner.  It was my turn this year and having posted the above picture on facebook this year, it was on my mind.  Alex, the nephew on the right, used it as his profile picture for a short time and Mike and Matthew, the adopted nephew on my right, commented that he remembered the toy that Mike has in his hand and how much they loved it.  The kids all seemed to love the memory of this time in our lives as much as I did.  Matthew has a long history of breaking every single slinky that Mike ever owned and one Christmas a few years ago, he gave him one as a gift, which was funny because they were 18 and 19 at the time!  When Matt commented that he loved the toy, I asked him on facebook if he had broken it!  He commented back that no, he didn't break that one, he just thinks he lost most of the pieces that went with it!

This year, having all the same kids at my table, including thank God our Max, I gathered them all on the stairs once more to have a redo shot taken.   Well, we've all grown some since that Christmas in 1995!  Here we are, Max included!  I had them all sit where they had when we took the original shot, Max included!  There was much grumbling going on as we all tried to squeeze our not 1995 bodies in the same space we occupied back then!  I can't tell you how much I love every one of these kids.

Christmas 2009

So today, 1/14/10,  I am thankful that God blessed me with each of them.  With Michael and Max, two well loved sons.  Alex and Charles my nephews.. how I miss the time spent with them.  I used to complain about all the extra work; little did I know how fast the time would fly!  Elena, my beautiful niece who makes me laugh and makes me feel so loved when I am in her company.  Matthew, my friend Denise's son.  I've known Matt since he was one and his mom and dad were transferring back to PA.   He's been a part of our family since then!   I'm reminded of the benediction at church when I see these faces... May God bless them and keep them, may He shine his face upon them, may He look upon them with favor and give them His peace.  I pray that they remember me as fondly as I remember them and that we have many, many, many more Christmases to spend together.  Hey kids...  in another 14 years, we are squeezing ourselves back onto these stairs for a retake!

Hug your kids today.  Hug your nieces and nephews if you are lucky enough to see them daily.  Hug your friend's kids too.  Time flies.

Carpe Diem!
